"I love the layered effect of experiencing poetry through multi-media platforms. To hear and see the 'texture' of poetry and enjoy the performative qualities of the language allowed me to appreciate a new poetic aesthetic that I hadn't considered. Watching a YouTube clip of performance poetry enabled me to personally contribute to this movement that's eroding the hegemony of the written poetic word. It felt as though this was how the poetry was intended to be experienced. In this instance, new media is really newness media.

But if performance poetry is essentially a mutual transaction between complicit parties, are we losing the community that is enjoyed by the exchange between audience and performer? Of course the possibilities for sharing poetry via new media channels might broaden the community of listeners who experience the poetry. But to record one's performance as a live video feed surely deprives the performer of audience exchange. The to-ing and fro-ing of ideologies and interpretations that bounce around a live performance is lost with new media consumption and experience."
